Recover from a bad position to make sure you're out of the line of heavy fire.

Trainer: Vinny Magalhaes is the four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor reveales his best no-gi techniques with Casey Milliken


The Techniques:



1 - Casey has gained mount and is in a strong position to do a lot of damage with punches or elbows.



2 - Vinny bridges his hips to shift Casey’s weight and make him fall forward so his hands hit the mat. 



3 - As he moves Casey, maintaining elevation with his hips, Vinny turns to one side with his shoulder on the mat. 



4 - From this position, Vinny can grab Casey’s leg and push it between his legs and into his half guard. 



5 - Once Vinny has trapped Casey’s leg, he immediately turns his body 180 degrees to face into him.


 


6 - From this position, Vinny can adjust his other leg around Casey and re-establish guard. 


Top Tips:

WHITE BELT

  • Act as soon as you’re mounted to minimize the risk of being hit clean on the ground

PURPLE BELT

  • Don’t turn your shoulder too far in step 3 and risk your opponent taking your back

BLACK BELT

  • Instead of recovering guard, you could also pop up to your knees in a 50-50 position, where you can initiate a scramble or take the back.
