Ricardo Mayorga is familiar with controversy. The Nicaraguan former lineal welterweight champion boxer was a big attraction for his raging aggression and exhilarating fighting style combined with trash talking, a 20-a-day smoking habit and hard-drinking lifestyle.
His 2013 foray into MMA was bound to generate attention, despite – or maybe because of – the circus that surrounded his first attempt against Din Thomas, which failed before it began due to an injunction by Don King.
Alas, the headlines he made were all negative. ‘El Matador’ was 20lb overweight for his fight at Omega MMA: Battle of the Americas against inexperienced Canadian, Wesley Tiffer, then had his ‘win’ overturned to a no-contest due to an illegal knee to the spine.
Three more fights followed that year. All ended in defeat.
