Renzo Gracie is viewed as one of the greatest BJJ artists ever, and an inspiration to many. He does us the honor of passing on his skills and wisdom.

Armlock from the Turtle position (after an opponent’s failed shoot)

1. Renzo (left) starts his attack in front of Ali (this position is common when Ali has attempted a takedown and has been sprawled on).

Renzo makes an underhook with his right arm.

2. Renzo overhooks Ali’s right arm with his left arm. He uses his left hand to cup Ali’s right bicep. Using his underhook with his right arm, Renzo lifts Ali’s shoulder up by reaching his own right hand up to his left shoulder.

3. Renzo places his left hand on Ali’s left hip with his fingers pointed outwards.

4. Keeping his right arm tight to his chest and his left hand pressed down on Ali’s hip, Renzo lifts his left knee off the mat to stand up.

5. Renzo steps his left leg over the top of Ali’s back, placing his shin across Ali’s back with his knee pinched tight under Ali’s armpit.

6. Renzo starts to pivot his hips round towards Ali’s head by turning his right foot out and taking his left hand from Ali’s hip to the mat, bringing his hip up and over the top of Ali’s back.

7. While still hugging Ali’s arm tight, Renzo drops down to his left forearm, bringing his left hip towards the mat.

8. Dropping down to his left side, Renzo keeps his knees pinched around Ali’s left arm while snaking his right shin into the side of Ali’s head and neck.

9. Renzo finishes the armlock by securing Ali’s left wrist with both hands, making sure that Ali’s thumb is pointed away from his own hips. Renzo pinches his knees tight and throws his hips into the back of Ali’s left elbow to force the tap.
