UFC 83: Georges St-Pierre TKO 2 Matt Serra
GSP’s redemption in Montreal was the start of something special
After losing the 170lb title to Matt Serra at UFC 69, Georges St-Pierre was ravenous for a rematch.
And boy did he make New York’s finest pay when he finally got his hands on him in his hometown of Montreal, Canada in April 2008.
The fight played out exactly how most insiders believed the first fight would, with the younger, stronger St-Pierre completely overwhelming the wily veteran, who’d earned his title shot after winning TUF 4.
With dominant takedowns, overwhelming ground ‘n’ pound and slick guard passing, GSP was on point from the start.
Serra was no match for him and was inevitably finished in the final seconds of round two.
REIGN OF TERROR
This win over Serra catapulted GSP back to the top of the 170lb division and led to six years of dominance before his hiatus from MMA began in November 2013.
He will look to extend his unbeaten run and add the middleweight title to his collection in his UFC comeback planned for later this year.
STEP 1:
GSP has been dealing heavy damage from Serra’s back, so the champion tries to roll away, but only succeeds in establishing guard, where he continues to eat elbows and punches.
STEP 2:
The BJJ black belt uses all his ground acumen to try and escape again, but only succeeds in turtling up as St-Pierre stays tight, retakes his back and starts throwing punches at his head again
STEP 3:
The challenger transitions to the side and ups the intensity of his attack, relentlessly throwing knees to the body until referee Yves Lavigne stops the fight with 15 seconds left in the round.
