Take a quick step back to grab a rolling toe hold from half guard

Ricky Lundell, the BJJ black belt and NCAA Division I wrestling prodigy, presents his MMA leglock masterclass with UFC heavyweight Frank Mir.

1 - Ricky begins on top in half guard.

2 - Frank bases out and steals an underhook.

3 - Ricky passes his right arm in front of Frank, posts on his hands and takes a back step with his left leg over Frank’s left leg.

4 - Ricky keeps his weight towards his right arm, which he drives under Frank’s right leg.

5 - Ricky rolls and creates a triangle with his legs to get a strong hold and control over Frank’s legs.

6 - Ricky grabs the top of Frank’s toes with his left hand, creates a figure four with his right and turns. Frank either taps, or his ankle breaks.

Top Tips

Purple Belt

  • Try and do step three when your opponent sits up, to give them no time to react.

White Belt

  • You can really keep your weight forward, so you’re out of danger and within easy reach of your opponent’s leg

Black Belt

  • You can also grab the toes early (just after you step back), which will mean the leg is locked down and your opponent will have almost no room to escape once you’ve finished rolling.
