At Bettendorf High School in Iowa, Lawler helped to team reach consecutive state championships.

In contrast to his all-out- offense fighting style, he played defensive end in high school football.

Lawler started training MMA with Pat Miletich aged 16, and turned pro three weeks after his 19th birthday.

His mom is half Filipino, half German, and works as a stewardess for American Airlines.

Lawler stopped full-contact sparring for about six years between 2006 and his return to the UFC in 2013.
