Lone’er Kavanagh has booked himself a date with Cage Warriors Flyweight champion Shaj Haque, following his unanimous decision victory over Shawn Marcos da Silva at last night’s Cage Warriors 169.
The co-main event witness two of the top unbeaten Flyweight prospects square off in a bout that certainly lived up to expectation inside the Indigo At The O2 in London.
After the 15 minute bout, Kavanagh was handed the unanimous decision victory and moves to 6-0-0.
Speaking to Edith Labelle post fight, the 24-year-old reflected on the war he had just competed in. He said:
“I feel great, I am not going to lie to you. We both said it was going to be an entertaining fight and I sure think that was an entertaining fight. I hope it was, I hope the fans at home enjoyed it.
“I would like to say it was a very entertaining fight. Little bit scrappier from my end, that I would've wanted. I wanted a bit more of a sharpshooter kind of vibe. Which I feel like I did, I caught him with some nice in a few exchanges but I also enjoyed a bit of a tear up at the same time.”
Heading into the contest, there was a lot made of the two unbeaten prospects going head to head early in their career. Having already been scheduled to fight previously, both men had plenty of time to prepare for one another but even with that time, Kavanagh admitted that there were a few things that surprised him during the contest.
“He definitely surprised me, he was tough. I feel like in the first round I dropped him a few times and he kept going and kept going. He was very slippery as well, it was hard to find his head. He came out he was fighting the whole way, jumping knees everything and to be honest with you, I just had an amazing time in there. I enjoyed every last minute of it and I am happy it went the way it did. “
Edith Labelle then revealed that the contest was in fact a title eliminator, which now sets Kavanagh up to face the current Flyweight champion and vastly more experienced Shaj Haque next. Undeterred by the experience difference, the top prospect feels more than ready to capture Cage Warriors Gold. He said:
“I am ready. I feel good. I have been wanting this Cage Warriors strap for a while so it is finally coming. Bit of gold around my waist, all respect to the champ but, I am coming for you."
At the time of writing it is unclear as to exactly when the Flyweight title fight will happen but there is no doubt both men will be keen to get this scheduled as quick as they can.
