Brendan Loughnane wasn't able to cap off what would've been an incredible bounce back year by becoming the 2024 PFL featherweight champion.
Though a second title win would've been remarkable, the Brit has already had his fair share of storybook moments in the promotion.
The 36-fight veteran went all the way in 2022 where it felt like in many ways, he had finally earned the respect that his hard work deserved.
After being finished for the first time in his career last season, he came into 2024 with a point to prove and he certainly did that even if he lost out to Timur Khizriev in Riyadh on Friday night.
The undefeated Russian improved to 18-0 with a dominant performance, showcasing both his grappling skillset and an improved striking game which kept Loughnane guessing.
Throughout the five-round bout, the commentary made multiple references to what seemed like an injury to the former champion's right leg which compromised his movement and leg kicks which have always been two of his best weapons.
Despite this, his trademark toughness and tenacity kept him in the fight at all times even if he was unable to really test the Russian.
In the aftermath of the loss, Loughnane posted multiple times on Instagram to reflect on the fight and share his immediate feelings.
The second post sees the 34-year old leaving the arena and later, leaving Saudi Arabia behind with the following caption attached, showing that despite his setback, he's in good spirits after everything that he has accomplished.
"I lost the fight but won the war"
Loughnane's first post after the fight provided a slightly longer statement for his fans and supporters.
"Through the highest highs and the lowest lows. All you can do is give your all. Five rounds with a great undefeated fighter."
It remains to be seen what will be next for Loughnane who at this point in his career, could choose to hang up the gloves if he wanted to.
Whatever he decides to do, he earned the love and respect of the fans many years ago.
