Islam Makhachev didn't get the chance to take on the top contender in his division at UFC 311 on Saturday night following the huge changes to the card on the day before fight night.

What he did get to show by taking a risk that some may have avoided is that when he says it doesn't matter who you put in front of him, he means it.

His rematch against Arman Tsarukyan fell through on Friday after it was announced that due to an injury to the challenger, Renato Moicano would be stepping up on short notice.

Whilst the Brazilian may not be one of the very top guys in the division right now, he's on an impressive winning streak and all of a sudden, he had the chance to shock the world.

The crazy turn of events was quickly settled by the champion in the main event where once he secured his first takedown of the fight, he capitalised on his moment.

Makhachev earned the 13th submission win of his pro career via his signature D'Arce choke, telling Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview that he is a man of his word:

"I always looking for finish. I told you guys, I not just talk. All fight week, all my camp, all media I told, if my opponent gives me small chance, I will close the night."

It may have been a huge moment for Moicano but Makhachev's performance was very much business as usual as he arrived, got the tap and left without taking any significant damage.

"For me, no matter. Who can make 155, just step to the cage and stay in front of me."

The pound-for-pound number one fighter in the sport isn't just one of the most impressive champions in UFC history with the most title defences of any lightweight titleholder, he's mentally bulletproof with no chinks in his armour.

"I like this belt, it's not my job. If somebody want this belt, come to the cage."
