The first UFC PPV card of 2025 saw four undefeated records suffer the first setbacks of their pro careers.

One of the biggest upsets of the night came in the featured prelim where Payton Talbott learned some vital lessons by facing an experienced competitor.

Talbott came into the fight off the back of a highly impressive 2024 where he earned back-to-back wins and performance bonuses for his victories over Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri.

Having only turned pro in 2021, the 26-year old who had an overall record of 9-0 heading into the Intuit Dome has produced a rapid rise to the top.

However, January 18 was a reminder that whilst Talbott is clearly an impressive talent with star qualities, you're going to be tested along the way.

Brazil's Raoni Barcelos is an experienced veteran with 12 UFC bouts under his belt having faced the likes of Kyler Phillips, Umar Nurmagomedov and Chris Gutierrez in the past.

In fact, the 37-year old had already been in the UFC for three years before Talbott had even made his pro debut.

Barcelos was able to halt his opponent's win streak at UFC 311 by repeatedly securing takedowns and controlling Talbott on the floor.

The exciting striker did a good job of avoiding significant damage and he had some moments in the fight but it wasn't enough to win any of the three rounds.

In an Instagram post, Talbott reflected on the defeat as he spoke about being grateful for this experience and taking the positives away from it:

“The vet gave me my first scar,” Talbott wrote. “May the skin heal itself to be strong and never split again. Lucky to have such people in my life. Fortunate to be able to learn valuable lessons. Still had fun.”
