To the untrained eye, this is the image that should accompany Islam Makhachev's latest title defense at UFC 311, where he delivered a picture-perfect D’Arce choke to Renato Moicano in the first round. Instead, the colorful shorts give away the victim's identity: Dustin Poirier. Islam stands with wins on repeat. A feat we rarely see.
The more recent image of Makhachev’s vice grip wrapped around Moicano’s neck encapsulates everything about the champion’s reign: precision, power, and an unrelenting hunger for perfection.
Moicano landed a solid punch early, momentarily sending Makhachev to the canvas. This was a rare sight that only fueled the lightweight king's determination. With clinical efficiency, Makhachev secured the takedown, maneuvered into position, and locked in the choke with calculated aggression that left his opponent helpless. As Moicano tapped and then walked away with a face etched with resignation, Makhachev calmly released his hold, stood up, raised his hands, and then pointed to the Octagon to tell everyone it was his domain. He gave Moicano the playbook, almost telling him what he would do, but that still didn't change the outcome. That's pure confidence. Another black belt. Another victory. Another chapter in his growing legend.
