Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski (26-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) is in a confident mood ahead of his return to the Octagon next month.

The Australian is preparing to face rising contender Diego Lopes (26-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) for the featherweight title, following the announcement that Ilia Topuria is set to vacate the belt and move permanently up to 155 pounds.

Volkanovski held the title for over four years before being dethroned by 'El Matador' at UFC 298 just over a year ago. Now, with a shot at redemption, the 36-year-old is determined not to let it slip.

"I think I can beat Diego everywhere", Volkanovski said during an interview with Engage. "He's dangerous...he’s going to be dangerous everywhere, so I need to sharpen up everything right, even if I want to go the wrestling route or grappling route, I think I dominate there anyway".

Lopes On The Rise At 145 Pounds

Lopes made his Octagon debut less than two years ago, but his impressive run of form has quickly propelled him into title contention. His recent wins over ranked contenders Dan Ige and Brian Ortega have showcased his exciting, scramble-heavy style to great effect.

"Everyone knows him for his Jiu-Jitsu, but trust me, I ain't worried if it goes there", insisted Volkanovski. "Can he handle the fact that even when things are going his way, I ain’t quitting, I'm coming back even stronger? I don't even think he'll get me there, but even if he does, I think he's still going to absolutely hate being in these positions because he’s going to realize I can’t stop this guy.

"I'll show the world and him that I'm just different. UFC 314, You're going to see the Volk that you guys are used to. Trust me, he's coming back and he's getting that belt back".
