Michael Bisping believes Tom Aspinall is on the verge of greatness.
Former UFC middleweight champion Bisping is refusing to get drawn into the "will they, won’t they" drama surrounding the potential heavyweight title unification bout between interim champion Tom Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) and reigning titleholder Jon Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC). Bisping believes the fight will likely happen—and that it will be one of the biggest matchups in recent UFC history.
“This will be the biggest heavyweight fight that the UFC has ever seen”, Bisping said in a video posted to his YouTube channel. “Jon Jones will probably get one of the biggest paydays the sport's ever seen. In fact, the only person I think that could even rival this or maybe got paid more would be a Conor McGregor. He's the biggest earner that the sport's ever seen.”
Jones last fought at UFC 309 in November, when he finished former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden. Bisping has a gut feeling that “Bones” could face Aspinall in the main event when the UFC returns to the iconic New York venue later this year.
“This fight's going to be gigantic. Jon Jones is going to get paid a sh**load of cash”, the UFC color commentator said. “And if it does actually happen, if it goes down in Madison Square Garden (which is what I always said it would because a fight of this magnitude needs an iconic venue), then everyone's going to get paid a sh** ton of money. And if Tom Aspinall can go through him, then he's going to make that ‘F-You money’ down the line.
“If he beats Jon Jones, becomes the undisputed champion of the world after this, every single fight is going to just be bigger and bigger. He's going to go down as the greatest fighter maybe in the history of the UFC, but of course he's got to beat Jon Jones first.”
