Former UFC light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev says he is targeting a return to the Octagon in May as he looks to re-enter the 205-pound title picture and potentially settle his rivalry with Alex Pereira once and for all.
Speaking to Russian journalist Igor Lazorin while seated cageside at an MMA event this past weekend, Ankalaev (21-2-1 MMA, 12-2-1 UFC) addressed questions about his next fight, the status of a potential trilogy bout with Pereira (13-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC), and long-term plans that could include a move up to heavyweight.
Ankalaev enjoyed a dominant run between 2018 and 2025, compiling a 14-fight unbeaten streak that culminated in a five-round victory over Pereira at UFC 313 last March. The Dagestani standout nullified “Poatan” over 25 minutes to capture the UFC light heavyweight championship.
However, the rivalry took a dramatic turn in their rematch at UFC 320 in October, when Pereira scored a stunning TKO just 80 seconds into the bout to reclaim the title and even the series.
Now, Ankalaev is focused on getting back into contention.
“I want to fight for the belt, of course,” Ankalaev said. “They said (my next fight) would be in May, but the opponent is still unknown.”
Speculation has centered on whether a third fight with Pereira is imminent, but Ankalaev indicated there has been little communication from the Brazilian champion’s side.
“I don’t know whether he is refusing or not, but for now, there’s no news from him yet,” he said.
While the trilogy remains unresolved, Ankalaev confirmed he has ambitions beyond 205 pounds. A move to heavyweight is on his radar, though only after business with Pereira is concluded.
“Yes, but first I want to settle my rivalry with Pereira. It doesn’t matter if it’s for the belt or if it’s just a regular fight. I’ll move up to heavyweight after that, maybe.”
For now, Ankalaev appears content to wait for clarity from the UFC, hopeful that May will mark the next chapter in one of the division’s most compelling rivalries.
