Ilia Topuria is brimming with confidence ahead of his upcoming lightweight title unification bout against interim champion Justin Gaethje, predicting that the fight will be over before the opening round comes to a close.
Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) is scheduled to defend his UFC lightweight championship against Gaethje (27-5 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in the main event of Freedom 250, the UFC's historic event set to take place on the grounds of the White House on June 14.
The undefeated champion enters the fight riding a remarkable run of form. Topuria knocked out former featherweight champions Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway before moving up to lightweight and stopping Charles Oliveira to capture the 155-pound title, cementing his status as one of the sport's biggest stars.
Despite his recent success, Topuria insists he is fully prepared for a grueling battle if necessary. However, he doesn't expect the fight with Gaethje to last very long.
Speaking with Megan Olivi, Topuria expressed complete confidence in both his conditioning and his ability to finish the interim champion early.
“I'm prepared. I'm prepared and I have the stamina to go, not for five rounds, but for five days I can be in there,” Topuria said. “I know how it feels when you're tired, when you can't do more and you never give up. So I'm ready, but I have the complete faith that I'm going to finish him in the first round. I just want to make it look beautiful.”
Topuria's prediction is the latest indication of the supreme confidence he has carried throughout his championship run. The Spanish-Georgian star has backed up his bold claims with a series of highlight-reel knockouts, and he now hopes to add Gaethje to an impressive list of former champions and elite contenders he has defeated.
Gaethje, meanwhile, earned the interim lightweight title with a victory over Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 and has welcomed the role of underdog heading into the matchup. Known for his durability, aggression, and knockout power, the veteran represents another significant test for Topuria as he looks to further establish his dominance at 155 pounds.
With both men making bold predictions ahead of the fight, anticipation continues to build for what could be one of the most memorable championship bouts of the year when they meet on the White House lawn later this month.
