Islam Makhachev has revealed that he would prefer to defend his UFC welterweight title against Michael Morales rather than Ian Machado Garry if given the choice, citing the Ecuadorian contender’s undefeated record as a stronger addition to his legacy.

Makhachev (28-1 MMA, 17-1 UFC) is expected to make the first defense of the 170-pound title later this year, with both Morales (19-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Machado Garry (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) emerging as leading candidates for a shot at the champion. Speculation has recently linked Makhachev to a potential clash with Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia this August, though no fight has been officially announced.

Speaking with Red Corner MMA, Makhachev explained why he believes Morales would be the more meaningful opponent.

“If we pick between Morales and Ian, to be honest with you, in terms of my legacy I would go with Morales because he’s still undefeated,” Makhachev said. “If I beat Ian Garry, some will say, ‘Shavkat beat him too a few fights ago.’”

While Makhachev appears to favor Morales, he acknowledged that both contenders have earned their place in the title conversation.

“I agree that they are both rightful contenders,” he said.

The former lightweight champion also brought up another name that he believes is being overlooked in the welterweight title picture: former champion Kamaru Usman.

“I also don’t write off Kamaru Usman, although everyone else does, but if you match Usman up with those two guys, I don’t think they beat him,” Makhachev said. “I’m leaning towards Usman beating them.”

Machado Garry has spent recent weeks publicly campaigning for a title shot, repeatedly calling on Makhachev through social media to accept a fight. According to the champion, however, there has been no formal offer to accept.

“When you keep silent they start talking online and people start believing them,” Makhachev said. “‘Accept the fight’…I accept. But there’s no contract, how should I accept it? What should I accept?”

Makhachev said he has already made his position clear regarding a potential return to the Octagon.

“That was my reply to him…send me the contract, I would accept any fight,” he said. “I am ready, send me the contract. I’m in camp now so I will be ready to fight in July.”
