Islam Makhachev has dismissed speculation that he is planning to retire, making it clear that he has no intention of stepping away from the sport anytime soon.
The reigning UFC welterweight champion addressed the rumors ahead of his first title defense against Ian Machado Garry in the main event of UFC 330 on Aug. 15. Speaking with MMA Junkie on Monday, Makhachev said reports suggesting he would retire after the fight are false.
“Somebody put the fake news (out that) I’m going to retire after this fight…no, it’s not true,” Makhachev said. “I want to keep going, you know? The feeling when you stay in shape (and) become the best fighter in the world, it’s an amazing thing, you know? I’m never, ever going to find something like this outside this sport. I want to keep fighting and we will beat all (of the) records and stay here (for many) more years.”
Having previously dominated the 155-pound division before vacating his belt in order to move up and become a double champion, Makhachev remains focused on extending his legacy at the top of the welterweight division for many years to come.
