Opponent too tough to TKO? Slip to the side for a slick and simple submission solution.

Greg Jackson, the world’s most in-demand coach, demonstrates the best techniques for the cage with help from women’s MMA pioneer, Julie Kedzie.

1. Greg has got to a dominant mount position on Julie and is throwing strikes to try and finish her.

2. Julie is doing a good job of covering up, so Greg reacts by shooting his left hand past Julie’s guard and onto the mat.

3. Greg drops his weight to Julie’s left side and uses his right hand to push her elbow above his left shoulder.

4. Greg grabs his right bicep with his left hand and hides his right hand behind his head.

To avoid being bucked over onto his back, Greg has to leave mount position. He does this and continues to control Julie by sliding his left knee across her stomach.

5. Greg continues to move laterally until he is in side control and, with his arms still in position, he flattens himself out, rolls his shoulders back and pushes his chest in to finish the choke.

TOP TIPS

Amateur: For balance, keep your legs apart when applying this choke.

Semi-pro: Once you leave the mount, move away from your opponent’s legs to avoid getting caught in their half guard.

Professional: Drive your shoulder underneath your opponent’s chin to expose their neck.

In action: Brock Lesnar submitted Shane Carwin with an arm triangle in a come-from-behind victory to retain his title at UFC 116.
