Issue 146

October 2016

Just when your opponent thinks they’re out, you pull them back in – by countering their kimura with an armbar.

Ricky Lundell, the BJJ black belt and NCAA Division I wrestling prodigy presents his grappling masterclass with Dan Hardy.

1. Ricky has control of Dan’s back with a bodylock around his waist.

2. Dan tries a counter attack by trying to lock Ricky’s arm in a kimura.

3. To stop the kimura, Ricky reaches through Dan’s legs with his free hand and joins his hands together.

4. Ricky steps in front of Dan’s legs with his right foot and starts to drive his hips forward.

5. Keeping his back straight, Ricky continues to drive forward with his hips and lifts Dan.

6. As Ricky takes Dan over his shoulder, Dan rolls forward to avoid being dumped on his head.

7. From the bottom, Dan’s wrist control is a disadvantage because Ricky now has his arm hooked and can fall to his back, break Dan’s grip and extend his limb into an armbar to finish.

TOP TIPS

White belt: Look to close your guard before attacking with kimuras to avoid being countered.

Purple belt: Alternatively, you can finish this transition with your own kimura. From step 6, drop to your knees and torque your opponent’s arm behind their back.

Black belt: Keep your opponent’s arm close to your chest as you fall back for the submission so your opponent can’t break free.
