Vinny Magalhaes, four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas reveals his best fight tips with Scott Kaplan.

1. Scott is in Vinny’s guard. Vinny pulls Scott’s lapel out from his belt with his right hand.

2. Keeping a hold of Scott’s lapel, Vinny shoots his hand under Scott’s armpit and past his back.

3. Vinny passes Scott’s gi to his left hand and pulls down with it to control Scott’s posture.

4. Vinny then passes Scott’s gi back to his right hand so he has a double grip on it.

5. Taking hold of Scott’s right arm with his left hand, Vinny pulls it across his stomach.

6. After opening his guard, Vinny gets an angle by pushing off Scott’s hip with his left foot

7. Vinny makes a second grip on Scott’s lapel with his left hand and keeps Scott close by closing his guard.

8. After squaring off with his hips, Vinny pulls his elbows towards his stomach to apply the choke.

TOP TIPS

White belt: The higher the grip on your opponent’s collar, the tighter the choke will be.

Purple belt: You can avoid this choke by rotating your head to the other side of your opponent’s grip when they feed their hand inside your collar.

Black belt: The traditional way to finish the choke is with both hands inside your opponent’s collar, but this can be difficult to get. Once you have your first grip, go for the cloth on your opponents shoulder for the second grip.
