Use the kata guruma fireman’s carry as an emergency response to your opponent’s attack

Jimmy Pedro Jr

The US Olympic coach and 6th degree black belt shows you judo techniques that work for MMA, along with Aaron Kunuhiro

1 - Attacking first, Aaron grabs Jimmy’s lapel with his left hand.

2 - Jimmy counters by bringing his arm inside Aaron’s grip and grabbing Aaron’s upper left arm with his right hand.

3 - Jimmy uses his grip to elevate Aaron’s arm, exposing his hips to be attacked.

4 - Jimmy shoots his left knee and arm through Aaron’s legs whilst turning perpendicular to him.

5 - Now on his knees, Jimmy pulls down hard with his right hand, hooks Aaron’s leg with his left arm and bumps his hips up to get to his knees, which takes Aaron off his feet.

6 - Jimmy steps onto his left foot and dips his right shoulder, which starts to shift Aaron’s weight across his shoulders.

7 - Jimmy continues to pull with his right hand and uses his left arm to throw Aaron’s legs over his shoulder.

8 - Jimmy finishes the move by landing in side control, which is a very dominant position.

TOP TIPS

WHITE BELT

Keep your head high and your back straight when you lift your opponent.

BROWN BELT

Attempting this throw as your opponent moves forward allows you to use their momentum, making it easier to pull off .

BLACK BELT

This throw can be adapted to use without the gi. Instead of grabbing your opponent’s sleeve, use a two-handed arm grip to set up your level change.

JIMMY SAYS

“This move is now outlawed in judo, but it used to be one of my go-to moves.”
