TAP IN A SNAP

I believe a new rule should be introduced: the ‘four-tap rule,’ in which a competitor must tap either the body or the floor a minimum of four times before the referee makes the decision of ending the fight.

Many fighters will post out in submissions like the guillotine to give them balance and set up for an escape. Yet in this situation I have personally witnessed fights where the referee has misread the post for a single tap and called an early finish to the event, much to the loser’s dismay.

With the four-tap rule in place, a participant can post and even repost without the fear of a misjudgment from the referee. Critics say fighters don’t have enough time to tap four consecutive times; but a fighter should be professional enough to leave time for the escape, should he need to do so.

These new guidelines would result in greater opportunities to win and therefore better fights. It would also decrease the amount of unfair decisions that can result in a fighter training for months to lose by an unjust decision.

HEAVYWEIGHT STALEMATE

I was looking back over all the UFC heavyweight champions and I noticed one big fact: the heavyweight title has never been defended three times. I would have thought that Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez or Randy Couture would have retained the title, but no; out of the 21 championship reigns (including interim) only three have had two defenses, eight with one defense and the other 10 with no defenses. It’s just a waiting game to see if current king Velasquez can break that record.
