A good beat’s the key says the ‘Filipino Wrecking Machine’ as he lets FO listen to some of his favorite tracks
What do you use to listen to music?
“My iPhone, man. It’s got everything in there. I use it for everything, my calls, me emails and my music.”
Has your music taste changed as you’ve got older?
“Oh yes, it’s changed so much. The reason why is that growing up in Northern California I listened to a bunch of Bay Area R&B and rap, that’s what I grew up on. I love that stuff. Anywhere from E-40 to Too Short to Mac Dre, I listen to all that stuff. Then as I grew older I started going through some older stuff and now I love to listen to contemporary Christian music. I love it. It’s very uplifting and I needed that, it got me by and helped me through a lot of adversity in my life. But I like a lot of mainstream music too, anything with a good beat which I can dance too.”
Do you have any favorite artists right now?
“I do, I actually have three favorites. One of them is Chris Tomlin, whose music is very uplifting. I also like Shai Linne, a Christian rapper, he’s the same way and his lyrics are unbelievable. Really uplifting. Usually rap is about negative stuff, but he just pumps out positive up-lifting vibes and I like that. Plus he’s got lyrics man, he can really spit them out. And one more, it’s got to be the Black Eyed Peas. I’m lucky enough to know them and they’re good people – and they’re amazing at what they do.”
Do you listen to different styles of music when you are at home or driving to practice?
“It’s very different to what I listen to in the gym. When I’m training it really has to be up-beat stuff but when I’m in the car I prefer to just kick back and drive. There are a lot of different moods that I might be in either going or coming back from practice so I’ve got quite a few different types
of music.”
What kind of music do you like to listen to while you train?
“I always listen to music when I’m training. I like to listen to stuff with a beat to it, especially when I’m sparring and stuff like that. I really like stuff with a good rhythm and a beat.”
Do you walkout to the same song or do you mix it up?
“I use two songs; I either have E-40 Tell Me When To Go or I have Bebot by the Black Eyed Peas. That song talks about my culture while E-40 talks about where I come from. I was planning on coming out to Bebot for the Chael Sonnen fight before I got injured. But I’ll always just mix these two tracks up. People know me by these songs now. They sum me up, they show both sides of me. I am so proud to be Filipino, my parents raised me in the whole culture, and I am proud to be California raised too.”

1 Shai Linne, For Your Glory
“This is a song that basically talks about God and what he can do in your life. It explains how, if you are approached by adversity, you can rise above it with his help and his strength. I use this song a lot.”
2 Chris Tomlin, Our God
“This is another song that has helped to uplift me during some trials and tribulations. When I was low this song lifted me up and gave me hope in the midst of despair.”
3 E-40, Tell Me When To Go
“This is my song, this is what gets me hyped. My walkout song. It gets me energized it gets me feeling proud of where I come from and it gives me that extra boost to step out there.”

“This song is for when I’m in a playful mood. I like to listen to this and dance around to it. The beat is pretty sweet, man.”
5 Black Eyed Peas, Bebot
“My other walkout tune. This song shows my heritage, it talks about my culture, my Filipino background. I know the artists, they’re friends of mine, and this is just a really great song.”
