Master chain sequences to find your flow on the ground

Drilling long-chain submission and positional flows will help increase your understanding of the relationship between the various positions when ground fighting, reducing the time it takes for you to decide on your next move. Drill this sequence which includes four finishes and their counters in one flow, then create your own. This is only part one of the series. We’ll follow up in subsequent issues with different chain submissions.

Chain sequence start

1 Ryan (white shirt) is in Pete’s closed guard. Pete pushes Ryan’s hand to the mat.

2 Pete scoots his butt back, and, maintaining the wrist control, he reaches over the arm on which he has wrist control.

3 Pete grips his own wrist, creating a figure-four.

Finish 1

4 Pete hips out, creating a space for Ryan to fall into, and presses Ryan’s wrist toward his neck to apply a kimura.

5 When Ryan blocks the kimura, Pete scoots his butt back again and places his kimura-side foot on the hip. He reaches around Ryan’s neck without relinquishing the wrist control.

Finish 2

6 Pete grabs his own wrist and, with his elbow high, squeezes Ryan’s head toward his chest to finish the guillotine.

7 When Ryan blocks the guillotine, Pete returns to the kimura, posting his hand behind himself on the mat.

8 Pete hip heists, driving his hips high.

Finish 3

9 Pete heists Ryan over to the mount.

10 Without pausing, Pete steps off the mount to cross-body and reconnects the figure-four grip on the far-side arm.

11 Pete switches his base, putting his weight on his right knee.

12 Pete steps over Ryan’s head.

13 Pete forces Ryan to his side and squeezes his knees together, immobilizing Ryan.

14 Pete forces Ryan’s wrist towards his neck to finish the kimura from side-shoulder position.

Finish 4

15 Ryan resists the kimura, Pete steps around towards Ryan’s back.

16 Pete makes the harness grip by going under Ryan’s neck and connecting a Gable grip.

17 Pete forces Ryan to sit up.

18 Pete throws his hooks in and grabs Ryan’s neck.

19 Pete punches his hand behind Ryan’s neck and makes the grip on his biceps. He squeezes his elbows to finish the mata leao (aka the rear naked choke).
