Issue 035

March 2008

This month’s winning technique is a reconstruction of Shinya Aoki’s textbook gogoplata finish of Joachim ‘Hellboy’ Hansen from Pride’s 2006 New Years Eve event.

Although Hansen is a fighter who has always demonstrated superb submission defence, the rubber guard virtuoso Aoki used speed, dexterity, and phenomenal flexibility to catch the Norwegian with this unorthodox windpipe crush early in the first round.

1: Pete has closed guard, his legs around Matt’s waist.

2: As Matt tries to strike down, Pete uses a bicep control to block the punches and control the arm.

3: Pete uses the bicep control to put Matt’s hand to the mat and opens his guard.

4: He goes directly to ‘New York’, with his right foot on Matt’s hip and his left leg across the back of Matt’s neck. He grips his shin with his right wrist underhooking, and his left arm hugs around his leg.

5: Pete clears the neck with by bringing his elbow around the head and replacing his underhook on the shin on the left side of Matt’s head.

6: With the leg up high Peter is attacking with the threat of multiple submissions. Matt brings his left arm forward, other wise he will get triangled.

7: Reacting to this, Peter passes his right hand to the other side of Matt’s head, pushing on Matt’s face with his elbow.

8: With both arms on one side of the head, Peter goes back to hooking his right wrist under his shin. Note the space he has created and how he has pushed Matt’s base off to one side.

9: Pete pulls his foot under Matt’s chin and puts a Gable grip behind his head and pulling down, crushing Matt’s windpipe with his shin.

10: If Matt does not tap to the choke, then Pete removes his right foot from the hip…

11: …and hooks it over his left shin
