Issue 031

November 2007

Ingredients

80gm Porridge oats

300ml Skimmed milk or water

5gm Brown sugar

Drizzle Honey

1 fruit Orange zest

Handful Fresh berries

Method

I like to make mine in the microwave as it is fast and easy. Add 100ml of milk and start the cooking for one minute, take out and stir and add 50 ml more. Cook for a further minute, stir in the remainder and cook for another 30 seconds to one minute. I used to stir in a little bit of sugar and then sprinkle more on top – I have managed to wean myself off this and just get the natural sugar from blueberries, which are also a super food and a great antioxidant.

If you are going to use sugar then brown is better then white. For the healthier option you could throw in some berries and these will sweeten it up if they are ripe and flavoursome. If not try orange zest, some honey, or just eat it plain. Many shops are now selling these berries frozen, which is cheaper, easier to store and manage, so give these a try.

Facts

Porridge is high in fibre and a complex carbohydrate, so it should give you plenty of energy to train for the morning and to get you through until lunchtime. It also boosts your sex drive by rebalancing the testosterone in your body!
