Fight camp fuel from inside the ice-boxes of champions

The former Bellator welterweight champ can’t think of anything better than some chocolate indulgence

What five things do you need to have in your fridge at all times?

“I’ll need some sort of vegetables, chicken, cold cuts, fruit and fish in my fridge all year round.”

What would be your cheat meal of choice when you’re in camp?

“I have an addiction to chocolate (laughs). I’m not even fussy with what type of chocolate I’m eating. I’m also big into peanut butter.”

Do you keep anything other than frozen peas inside of your freezer?

“I don’t really keep frozen peas in there for injuries, but I do keep a plethora of ice packs in there (laughs). They’re great to use, especially after training. I’ve got like 10 ice-packs just taking up space in my freezer.”

What is your favourite bottled sauce?

“Ketchup makes anything taste better. You could probably put it on horse manure and it would still taste OK.”

What dessert do you enjoy the most?

“Chocolate lava cake is pretty amazing. I’ve got to say, though, that fills me up pretty quickly.”

What is your signature dish?

“It would have to be salmon or tilapia. I make a great tilapia with this mangled salsa on it and I make salmon with garlic sauce on it. Everywhere else I’ve tried it or bought it at a diner I’ve noticed that I have a proclivity towards my own salmon and tilapia, especially the mangled salsa.”

What is your favourite meal during fight camp?

“Honestly, most of the stuff that I eat is fish. I’d have to go back to salmon and tilapia. I think that’s the best for someone my size because I need to really watch what I eat when I’m doing a weight cut. “

What meal do you usually eat after your weigh-in?

“Usually it’s chicken parmesan. A nice heavy chicken parmesan with loaded pasta usually goes down pretty well. Anything thick and high in carbs to blow my weight back up.”

What food do you look forward to the most after a fight?

“Anything with bacon in it. Bacon is like a condiment to me, and I’m pretty sure it tastes good with anything... Bacon and pizza.”

What nationality of food is your favourite?

“I’d definitely say Italian food. I love it.”

What is your least favourite type of food?

“I’d probably say Chinese food. From time to time I’ll dabble with it, but I won’t say it’s my favourite just because of how thick and heavy it is.”

If you could only have three meals for the rest of your life, what would they be?

“They would be chicken parmesan, pizza and the third one would be anything with rice and beans. That’s most likely because I’m Puerto Rican (laughs). If Puerto Rican food wasn’t in my top three somewhere my grandmother would disown me.

She’s like the main cook here.”
