KATA GURUMA (SHOULDER WHEEL)

  1. Jimmy (white gi) grips Bobby’s right sleeve at the wrist with his right hand, and behind Bobby’s triceps with his left hand.
  2. Jimmy pushes up with his right hand and pulls back with his left to create an opening under Bobby’s right arm. This is key, because if Jimmy can get Bobby’s armpit locked behind his neck, he can control Bobby’s body and best execute the throw.
  3. Jimmy steps in with his right foot, feeds his right hand through Bobby’s legs and drops to both knees directly underneath Bobby, pulling Bobby down across his shoulders as he does so with his head locked into Jimmy’s
  4. Bobby still on his shoulders, Jimmy steps his right foot onto the floor, and then does the same with his left.
  5. Looking to drop Bobby on the mat, Jimmy steps out with his left foot and begins to roll onto Bobby’s right shoulder – Bobby’s not in a position to post that arm to resist the throw.
  6. Jimmy completes the roll, forcing Bobby’s back to the mat..
