Issue 160

November 2017

Lock up a tight kimura when your opponent is trying to slow down the fight.

1: Casey is mounted, but wraps his hands around Vinny’s waist and buries his head in Vinny’s chest to protect himself from strikes.

2: Casey holds on but Vinny pops his right leg up, plants his foot on the mat and leans towards the same side as his posted leg.

3: As Vinny leans to the side, Casey’s grip breaks and Vinny can push his head away using his left hand.

4: Casey’s left arm is now trapped between Vinny’s thigh and body, so he can reach back and grab Casey’s trapped wrist.

5: Vinny leans back slightly and drags Casey back to make room to wrap his left hand under his arm and grab his own right wrist.

6: To tighten the kimura and make Casey tap, Vinny pushes the arm down in front of his leg.

TOP TIPS

WHITE BELT

When someone’s not trying to escape, just try to defend and maybe get the ref to stand the fight back up.

PURPLE BELT

You can also try using ground and pound when you break your opponent’s grip in step 3.

BLACK BELT

You can also attempt to lock up a triangle from mount, but that poses more risk of your opponent escaping.
