Dricus du Plessis has finally opened up about his failed title defense against Khamzat Chimaev.

At UFC 319 in Chicago last week, Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) put his belt on the line against Khamzat Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) and things couldn’t have gone much worse. For five rounds, Chimaev smothered the champion, controlling every exchange on his way to winning 50-44 on all three judges’ scorecards.

In the immediate aftermath, Du Plessis refused to make excuses and gave Chimaev full credit for the performance. Now, more than a week later, the South African star is sticking to that stance. He admits he was beaten fair and square but vows the setback will only fuel his return.

“It’s been just over a week and I have spent some time with my family and friends, those closest to me who will be with me win or lose,” Du Plessis wrote in a post on his Instagram account.

“I embrace this loss with open arms, because believe me, as much as I hate losing, it’s as much a part of life as it is of our game — and I believe it’s necessary in my pursuit of greatness. Without the bitter, the sweet wouldn’t be as sweet.

“Make no mistake, I’m not a good loser, because a good loser becomes a frequent one. I am, however, an avid learner of the arts and of life itself.

“This loss has ignited a desire in me that will result in an onslaught bigger than the original domination. My return to glory and pursuit of greatness will be unimaginable to the average mind.

“I have absolutely no excuses for my performance. I was beaten by a better fighter on the night. Congratulations to my opponent and thank you for the honor of sharing the Octagon with you.

“Thank you for all the love and support from fans all over the world, and to my sponsors who always have — and always will — play a critical role in my success.

“And sincerely, thank you to all those who enjoyed seeing me fall, because I will return the favor, like I always have.

“I believe in the plan of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for He knows best, and I can’t wait to see what he has planned for me going forward.”
