Carlos Ulberg is staying focused on the task directly in front of him, but he’s not ruling out a future move to heavyweight.
“Black Jag” (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) headlines UFC 327 this Saturday at Miami’s Kaseya Center, where he faces former champion Jiri Prochazka (32-5-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) for the vacant light heavyweight title. The belt became available after Alex Pereira (13-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) vacated the division to pursue opportunities at heavyweight, starting with an interim title clash with Ciryl Gane at the UFC’s upcoming White House event on June 14.
Speaking to reporters during this week’s UFC 327 media day, Ulberg addressed the possibility of eventually following Pereira up a division if he captures gold.
“Yeah, I mean, eventually, yeah, for sure,” Ulberg said. “The main course is to get that title, hold it for as long as I can. And then, when I've proved myself in the light heavyweight division, then I would chase that heavyweight belt.”
For now, Ulberg’s attention remains firmly on Prochazka, a dangerous and unorthodox former champion known for his finishing ability. A victory would mark the biggest moment of Ulberg’s career and position him as one of the UFC’s newest titleholders.
While the idea of a future jump to heavyweight is clearly on his radar, Ulberg made it clear that any such move would come only after establishing a dominant run at 205 pounds.
With the division in transition following Pereira’s departure, Saturday’s main event offers Ulberg the chance not only to claim championship gold, but to begin shaping the next era of the light heavyweight division.
