Carlos Ulberg is expressing optimism as he begins his recovery from a knee injury sustained during his recent title-winning performance at UFC 327.

Ulberg (14-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) captured the light heavyweight championship earlier this month with a first-round knockout of Jiri Prochazka in the main event. However, the victory came at a cost, as he injured his knee during the bout and subsequently required surgery.

Now recovering at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, the New Zealander provided an encouraging update on his rehabilitation progress in an interview with the UFC.

“I’m working with the PI. The staff have been amazing. Just really positive about the progress and the rehab,” Ulberg said.

Initially, there were concerns that the recovery timeline could be lengthy.

“We went into the surgery thinking this could be between six and eight months, longer for some,” he explained.

Despite that projection, “Black Jag” indicated that his early progress has exceeded expectations.

“But with the progress we’ve got at the moment, it’s only been a week, and we are moving pretty good,” he said. “I think we’ve got a good formula going. The body is healing really fast. The doctors are happy, and the staff are happy.”

Ulberg also credited his mindset as a key factor in his recovery.

“It just comes down to the mentality that I have. I know I’m gonna get there quicker than anyone else,” he added.

As Ulberg continues his rehabilitation, it remains unclear whether the UFC will introduce an interim title fight during his absence. The champion, however, is already focused on returning to competition and defending his belt against top contenders.

“I just want to fight the best, man,” Ulberg said. “I think that’s the only way, just beating the best and staying on top, making sure that you’ve done your due diligence.

“I’ve got the title, and whoever wants it can come get it.”
