Hiroyuki Tetsuka has faced high-level grapplers before and has never been submitted.

The 36-year-old Japanese veteran carries that record into the most demanding grappling test of his career when he faces ONE Lightweight Submission Grappling World Champion Kade Ruotolo in a lightweight MMA bout at The Inner Circle on Friday, May 15, streaming live from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok on live.onefc.com.

Tetsuka arrives in Bangkok with momentum. His move down to lightweight produced an immediate statement. He scored a second-round stoppage of former ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion Shinya Aoki at ONE 173 last November. That win earned him this matchup with one of the most credentialed grapplers in the world.

When the Ruotolo fight was offered, his response was uncomplicated.

"Honestly, I was just happy," he said. "He's a globally recognised name, and his grappling is genuinely world number one level. Being able to fight someone with that kind of name and reputation, I'm really proud of that. And I've watched his technique a lot, so being able to experience it firsthand, to test myself against it, I'm genuinely excited about that."

The credentials behind that excitement are significant. Ruotolo is the youngest ADCC World Champion in history, holds a 3-0 MMA record with three first-round finishes, and has defended the ONE lightweight submission grappling title four times.

Whatever Tetsuka has encountered on the mat before, Ruotolo represents a step beyond it. Tetsuka knows this. He also knows his own record.

"I've had 21 professional fights and I've never been submitted once," he said. "There have been high-level grapplers in there too, and I'm confident I can defend it, and I'm confident I can beat him. That said, I fully expect the finishing power he has to be something I've never felt before."

A win would do more than extend his unsubmitted streak. Tetsuka has built a case for a lightweight title shot across eight wins in the division, and he is direct about what beating Ruotolo would mean for that argument.

"If I beat Ruotolo, I think I should just get it next," he said. "If I win this one, it's time for ONE to give me a title shot and a bonus."
