Lumpinee Stadium has hosted its share of significant nights, but Friday, July 31, carries a particular kind of weight. A ONE World Title defense builds an entire card around a single moment.
Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu makes the first defense of his ONE Bantamweight MMA World Title against undefeated Azerbaijani-Russian standout Elbek Alyshov in the main event of The Inner Circle 24. The card streams live for subscribers from Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium.
World Title fights in ONE Championship stretch across five rounds rather than three, a format that tests conditioning and composure as much as raw skill. Baatarkhuu has already lived through that structure once, submitting Fabricio Andrade in the fourth round at ONE Fight Night 38 this past December to claim the belt.
Alyshov arrives having never gone that distance himself, though his record suggests he may not need to. He has finished both of his most recent opponents, Carlo Bumina-ang and Jeremy Pacatiw, well before either fight reached its final horn.
Baatarkhuu has studied his opponent's game closely, and he does not shy away from acknowledging Alyshov's dangerous grappling pedigree.
"He is a good opponent for me. He's a very strong and skillful grappler who is really good at finishing his opponents when he has his submission locked in," Baatarkhuu said.
"He's probably a better wrestler than me, but it's too early to say. The only way to truly say it is on fight day in the ring."
That respect for his opponent has not shaken his belief that the tactical edge belongs to him once the two men are locked inside the ring together.
"Although I said that he's a strong opponent, I'm confident that I will get the victory. His fighting style is quite similar to mine. So it will be kind of easy for me to deal with," Baatarkhuu said.
"My mentality is more toward winning this fight. I think I have a better chance at winning than he does."
Asked for a prediction, Baatarkhuu did not hesitate, even while acknowledging the danger Alyshov brings into the fight.
"It's hard to predict, but of course, I am going after the finish. He's a strong opponent. It's going to be fire in the ring," Baatarkhuu said.
"Everyone has a fighting strategy, but once you step into the ring, sometimes things turn the other way. I also think he has a secret weapon against me, so I'm expecting a tough fight."
