Following striking superstar Rodtang Jitmuangnon's win at ONE 172 this past weekend, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced plans for a third showdown between the former flyweight Muay Thai king and ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan Haggerty.
Rodtang stunned the world when he knocked out 7-time K-1 World Champion Takeru Segawa just 80 seconds into their flyweight kickboxing super-fight at the Sunday, 23rd March, event, and Sityodtong was quick to put him together with his old rival in the aftermath.
"Actually, it's going to be Haggerty. We're doing Haggerty versus Rodtang [for the] next one," he said.
"But of course, Rodtang has many fights for him now. You know, he can call his shots now. He'll fight anybody. Rodtang will fight anybody."
It's been almost six years since the pair first met at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES in August 2019. Rodtang won that bout via unanimous decision after five thrilling rounds of action, and he snatched the flyweight Muay Thai crown away from Haggerty as a result.
However, it was clear there was more to come from their rivalry, and a rematch was quickly set for ONE: A NEW TOMORROW in January 2020.
This time, "The Iron Man" left no one in doubt about who the top dog was. He scored a third-round finish and went on to hold the World Title until he was stripped of it for missing weight at ONE 169 last November.
Despite the back-to-back losses, Haggerty has remained among the striking elite. He moved to ONE's bantamweight striking ranks in 2023 and won the division's Muay Thai strap before claiming the kickboxing crown the following year.
Though he lost the former to Superlek Kiatmoo9 last September, the British superstar defended the latter in his most recent matchup against Wei Rui this past February, and he was all for a trilogy bout with Rodtang when he heard the news.
"[Six] years later, we meet again," Haggerty wrote on Instagram.
"See you soon."
Meanwhile, Rodtang has rarely been left out of the best flyweight striker in the world conversation since his last meeting with "The General." And he cemented his position at ONE 172.
The 27-year-old has made it clear the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title is in his crosshairs, but he appeared open to moving up for a shot at Haggerty's bantamweight kickboxing strap on social media this week.
"You want to meet me, I want your championship belt too," he replied on Instagram.
Your belt looks nice. Let's measure it again."
No details have been revealed for when the combustible clash might take place. But given that both stars have left their recent outings relatively unscathed, fans should expect the showdown later this year.
