Sean Brady believes a potential title fight between Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry would heavily favor the reigning champion, particularly on the ground.
Brady (18-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC), who is preparing to face Joaquin Buckley (21-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) at UFC 328 on May 9, shared his assessment during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, as speculation continues to build around Garry potentially challenging Makhachev next.
While Garry has impressed with recent performances, including a win over Michael “Venom” Page, Brady pointed to moments of vulnerability in both that fight and Garry’s decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov.
“I think Islam will get him down, and I think Islam will probably submit him,” Brady said. “If you look where Shavkat had Ian, if you look where MVP had Ian in a weird grappling spot… people can get to him, and if someone like Islam gets to him, which I think he would, it would be a long night for Ian.”
Makhachev has built a reputation as one of the most dominant grapplers in the sport, with submission wins over elite opponents including Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, Dan Hooker, and Renato Moicano.
Despite his prediction, Brady acknowledged Garry’s striking ability and movement present unique challenges.
“Ian's very tricky,” Brady said. “He's very long and rangy. He knows how to keep his distance well. He knows how to skirt along the Octagon and keep you away from him.”
Still, Brady ultimately expects the champion’s grappling advantage to be decisive.
“I think it'll be a very interesting fight, but ultimately, I think Islam will get him down and sub him,” he added. “I'm just waiting for them to announce it.”
Brady also suggested alternative matchmaking scenarios if Makhachev is unable to compete, noting that another rising contender could enter the title picture.
“What else is there? There's either him or Morales,” Brady said. “I heard Islam might be hurt, but if he's hurt, then do Ian and Morales… that would be really interesting.”
