Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is targeting the UFC’s annual return to Madison Square Garden for what could be the final fight of his current UFC contract.
The former welterweight title challenger spoke with James Lynch of Home of Fight this week and revealed that he has just one bout remaining on his deal with the promotion.
Thompson made it clear that he wants that fight to take place at the UFC’s highly anticipated event at Madison Square Garden on November 14.
“Madison Square Garden, November 14th, gotta make it happen,” Thompson said.
The veteran welterweight confirmed that his contract situation is a major factor in his plans for the event, with just one fight left before he potentially enters free agency.
“No, I've actually got one fight left on my contract. One fight left, so we're looking at November and we'll see man,” Thompson said.
At this stage, Thompson does not have an opponent confirmed, but he indicated that he and his team are assessing the current welterweight roster to identify the right matchup.
“We'll see who we get, where we're kind of looking at the roster trying to find a good fight, a good barn burner if you will, for that for that card for sure,” he added.
Thompson, 43, has been a fixture in the UFC welterweight division for more than a decade and has twice challenged for the 170-pound title. With one fight remaining on his contract, a potential appearance at Madison Square Garden could mark an important moment in determining what comes next for the longtime contender.
